Care Support FETAC Level 5 and CPR

Who should participate in this course?

This course is designed to meet the needs of people working or planning to work in a care setting such as family carers, respite workers, home helps, care attendants or care assistants and people interested in working in the care sector.

Duration: 4 Days
No. Of Participants: 10 Participants per Programme.
Certification: A FETAC Level 5 Certificate will be awarded to each successful participant on this course.

Course Objective:

This module is designed to equip the learner with the skills and knowledge to work effectively in a care setting. The module aims to address the problems faced by carers in assisting clients and family members to adapt to the changes that age, ill health or disability brings, with the goal of helping them achieve the best possible quality of life while respecting the diversity in lifestyle, religion and culture of the individual.

Candidate Requirement:

  • Leaving Certificate or equivalent, or relevant live and work experience.
  • Learners must also be capable of undertaking assessment work to Ordinary Level Leaving Certificate standard.
  • International learners undertaking this course should have confidence in their English language, reading, writing and comprehension skills.
  • This programme is suitable for Family Carers, Respite Workers, Home Helps
  • Care Attendants or Care Assistants or people interested in working in the Care sector
  • Candidates must be working or on work experience in the Healthcare Sector throughout their course as assignments will require learners to draw on practical experience.

Course Content:

  • Adult, child and Infant Chain of Survival
  • Learn how to call 999 or 112
  • Learn CPR for Adults and Children
  • The recognition and treatment of choking

Unit 1 Relating to the client

  • Facilitate diversity of lifestyle, culture and religion for client
  • Respect and understand confidentiality and its limitation in relation to client information
  • Identify the effect of dependence on clients and carers
  • Describe the importance of client autonomy, involvement and choice
  • Demonstrate an awareness of the individuality of the client
  • Safeguard the privacy and dignity of clients
  • Understand the care needs of clients throughout their life continuum
  • Care for the client’s property, including items such as money, valuables and personal belongings

Unit 2 Reflection and Development

  • Explain the need for personal planning and growth
  • Identify personal strengths and areas for development as a care worker
  • Accept guidance and direction from others where appropriate
  • Describe how personal beliefs and attitudes may influence care work
  • Reflect on personal experiences in care work
  • Develop strategies for improving personal effectiveness

Unit 3 Working with Others.

  • Respect diversity of lifestyles, religion and culture in working with others
  • Adapt to different working environments
  • Work effectively as part of a team
  • Demonstrate effective interpersonal skills in care work
  • Demonstrate appropriate interactions with the family of the client
  • Demonstrate the use of verbal and non-verbal communications in the care setting
  • Accept and provide feedback from and to colleagues
  • Take the initiative in care work where appropriate
  • Differentiate between the responsibilities of the members of the health care team

Unit 4 Working in Care

  • Describe the structure and function of the health care service in Ireland
  • Identify the membership of the primary, secondary and tertiary health care teams.
  • Promote current health care information in the care setting
  • Explain the importance of reporting appropriate client information
  • Demonstrate reporting and record keeping skills that respect the privacy and dignity of the client
  • Work within the job description determined at local level for a care attendant
  • Identify relevant employee entitlements under current labour legislation

CPR

This module is designed for participants who wish to learn how to provide early CPR to adults, children and infants.

Assessment Method

  • Learning Record - 70%
  • Assignments - 30%.
  • Practical Test on CPR
