Who Should Participate on this Course?
For learners who wish to complete the FETAC Level 5 Healthcare Support (Major Award) or Learners who wish to pursue a career in nursing or in the Health Care Sector.

No. Of Participants: 10 Participants per Programme.
Certification: A FETAC Level 5 Certificate will be awarded to each successful participant on this course.
Course Objective:
Understand the concept of human development from conception to old age. Understand normal patterns of development from infancy to old age. Explore their own personal prejudices, fears and anxieties about working with people in need of care. Develop interpersonal/interactive skills appropriate to responding to the needs of others. Apply skills and knowledge to typical work based problems. Develop self-confidence and empathy in dealing with people.
Candidate Requirement:
- Leaving Certificate or equivalent, or relevant live and work experience.
- Learners must also be capable of undertaking assessment work to Ordinary Level Leaving Certificate standard.
- International learners undertaking this course should have confidence in their English language, reading, writing and comprehension skills.
Course Content:
Unit 1: Psychology and child development
- Theories of child development
- Normal pattern of development
- Secure attachments in the development of the child
- Experiences of childhood
- Variations of development within the normal range
Unit 2: Psychology and adolescence
- Physical, emotional, social and intellectual development in adolescence
- Factors that influence the personality and development of the adolescent including: family, peer, gender influences, social influence
- Relationship formation in adolescence
- Deviant behaviour
- Strategies to assist adolescents with interpersonal relationships and other issues
Unit 3: Psychology and adulthood
- Different stages of adulthood: young adult, adult and mature, independent
- Normal pattern of development at various stages
- Effects of goals and motivation on personal behaviour at the various life stages
- Range of needs and interpersonal skills required for personal contact and positive relationships
- Death and dying in the context of late adulthood
Qualifications
- Component Certificate in Human Growth and Development (FETAC Level 5)
- Certificate in Human Growth and Development (The College of Progressive Education)
Assessment Method
Two Assignments - 60%
Examination - 40%
